| 19 December 2004 | The final 'Whisper' for this year is available in
the newsletter archive.
Download your copy today if you don't have one yet. If you plan to come along to Pt. Vincent or to Waikerie make sure your name is on the appropriate attendance list on the club notice board. Alternatively feel free to send an email to admin@bgc.asn.au. |
| 14 December 2004 | As always after a committee
meeting the Events Calendar
has been updated again. The busy start to the New Year
with the Pt Vincent and Waikerie excursions will be
followed by another Dawn Patrol. This event was extremely
popular last year and this year promises to be even
better. Also, contrary to the earlier announcement the Tuckerway Hostel is now booked by the BGC due to a cancellation. Accommodation should not be a problem. Put your name on the list in the clubhouse. The Flinder Ranges Camp is going to be held a month earlier this year and won't coincide with the school holidays unfortunately. |
| 7 November 2004 | We seem to be on a roll lately:
Congratulations to Colin Stauss who also passed his oral
test on Saturday, thereby completing his C certificate. The committee meeting has resulted in a price increase for air experience flights and an update of the Events Calendar. Please check it regularly, either here or on the club noticeboard. Further, due to strong demand the
Waikerie Basic Cross Country Course & Performance
Week has been declared an official club outing and all 4
club gliders will be there. As a result there will be
no club flying at Balaklava during that time. We are
currently investigating the possibility of operating a
winch at Waikerie to provide the opportunity for cheaper
winch launches rather than aerotows. There will be a list
on the club notice board soon to register your attandance.
Alternatively send an email to admin@bgc.asn.au giving the days that you will be in
Waikerie, whether you are enrolled for the course and
which aircraft you would like to fly. We also ask you to indicate your attendance for the upcoming Pt. Vincent trip just prior to the Waikerie event, either on the club notice board or by email as above. The Tuckerway Hostel is unfortunately booked already so you will need to arrange your own accommodation. We are, however, booking for dinner at the Ventnor Hotel on 1 January 2005. Please let us know early whether you will be there to confirm the booking. |
| 31 October 2004 | The latest 'Whisper' is available in the newsletter
archive. If you haven't got
one yet, feel free to download your copy there. Saturday, despite the occasionally thick high cloud cover, turned out to be a fantastic soaring day. Thermals were quite strong throughout the day although at times far apart which required long glides through strong sink to contact the next one. Heights achieved were generally around 6500ft with a maximum of 8000ft up north near Koolunga. Catherine Love took the opportunity to introduce a friend to our kind of flying and then followed through with a 50km flight towards her Silver C. The flight ended in what had to be one of the largest fallow paddocks in the state just north of Redhill. We also had three visitors from the Adelaide Uni Gliding Club who had exteded soaring flights in the ASK21s and the ASH25, respectively. Whilst at it, Mark Newton took the opportunity to add the Mini Nimbus to his list of types flown. On Sunday Andrew Menzies tried to follow Catherine Love's example with his own 50km attempt but had to be retrieved from Snowtown. |
| 26 October 2004 | Another weekend of lots of flying.
On Saturday 23/10/04 we had the Subaru 4WD Club at the
airfield for Air Experience Flights. Our guests enjoyed
the club's hospitality and everyone had a flight, some
even two. In particular Leigh Bunting was kept busy
introducing our visitors to the finer points of
aerobatics. Although the thermals were not overly stong
and coudbase was only 3000ft at most we had almost a
record number of flights providing a little extra income
towards replacing the old parachutes and paying for the
winch upgrade. Yes, winch upgrade! Steve Shuck and John Wheatcroft had brought the recently acquired Isuzu Diesel truck up from Adelaide Saturday morning. Over the coming weeks Hilly winch will receive a refurbished motor. Some major cosmetic surgery and TLC are already well underway. The Diesel truck will replace the prime mover of Wally winch. With all this work going on in the maintenance hangar we could definitely use a few extra hands. Please consider giving a few hours of your time to this important project. The more the merrier in the workshop, the quicker the job gets done, and ultimately we'll all reap the benefits of lower our operating costs and more reliable winches. Congratulations to Andrew Menzies who completed his C certificate by passing his oral test. |
| 17 October 2004 | The Flinders Ranges Camp is behind
us and the soaring season picking up in big strides. The
weather treated the campers at Arkapeena kindly and again
- although somewhat hesitantly - provided the attending
pilots with plenty of lift - ridge, thermal and wave - to
enjoy the magnificent scenery around Wilpena Pound. Apart
from the usual social gatherings around the camp fire we
were treated to a delicious dinner at the Rawnsley Park
Woolshed restaurant with musical entertainment provided
by one of the passenger pilots. Over the week's flying we
became quite aquainted with the Wilpena and Rawnsley
tourist pilots on the air waves. The ones who came across
to the Arkapeena airstrip for a visit were introduced to
our kind of flying, which left them truely impressed. In
return one of our twin-seaters had an unscheduled stop-over
at the Wilpena airstrip ... but that is another story.
The glider was duely retrieved by road. The sizable
retrieve crew would have left "a pub with no beer"
in its wake had there been one along the route. The weekend after the camp the gliders were re-rigged back at Balaklava. Whopping thermals to well above 6000ft provided long soaring flights. Lyn Richie re-soloed and Colin Stauss completed his practical C certificate with a second 1hr flight. As always there are a whole range of upcoming events in the Events Calendar. Make sure you do not miss out and check there regularly. |
| 26 September 2004 | Our pre-Flinders Ranges Camp
lecture on Saturday (25/09/04 was well attended. This was
compulsory for all pilots wanting to fly solo at the camp.
If you missed out talk to the instructors at the camp. John Hudson covered airspace issues in the moring session before the briefing for the day's flying. At the evening session after dinner John Wheatcroft reviewed radio procedures and Bernard Eckey elaborated on the joys, how-to's, risks and dangers of ridge, thermal and wave flying, especially in conditions as encountered in the Flinders Ranges. The day offered great thermals which most attendees used for extended soaring flights. Notably Matt Colwell and Colin Stauss took advantage of the good conditions to complete a 1 hour flight each towards their C Certificates. As if that was not enough for one
day the new Committee held its first meeting which
resulted in the election of John Bradbury to Vice
President. Congratulations John! |
| 11 September 2004 | Congratulations to Andrew Menzies who completed his C certificate on Sunday, 5 September 2004. We hope you'll have lots of enjoyable flights this coming season! |
| 29 August 2004 | We have a new president!
Congratulations to Steve Shuck on his election at the
recent AGM. The new treasurer is Andrew Horton and John
Cheetham is taking on the role of secretary. Thanks, guys,
for stepping into these important and demanding positions
that are always hard to fill; we know you will do a great
job! Without you the club could not continue to exist! Our sincere thanks also go to the retiring president, Tim Lacey, and treasurer, Bob Mules, for their excellent service to the club over the years. Well done and let's hope you finally get to fly more again with the weight off your shoulders. As a result of these retirements two new faces join the ranks of the otherwise reelected committee: Catherine Love and John Bradbury. We look forward to your input and fresh ideas. All club email addresses and mailing lists have been updated. No need to change your address book entries of keep track of who is doing which job. Finally, a reminder to all club pilots to enter Cross Country flights into the XC statistics book in the clubhouse. Make sure that your entries are filled in correctly and all fields complete to avoid disappointment and disputes as incomplete entries will not be recognised for the trophy awards! |
| 22 August 2004 | If the wheather conditions over
the last few weekends is anything to go by the coming
season will be a good one. Despite the rather scratchy conditions due to wind and stable temperture profile this Saturday there were longer soaring flights, topped by far by Bernard Eckey and Andrew Menzies who managed to contact wave for a 3hr flight up to 6000ft. During last weekend's flying trial introductions in Minlaton a most of the attending club members had a number of extended soaring flights before and inbetween 'passenger' flights. For the introductory flights we had silky smooth conditions which helped to make the gliding event the highlight of the Yorketown Rural Women's Gathering. A BIG thank you to all the helpers for making this such a success! |
| 8 August 2004 | This weekend's working bee has again pursuaded the weather to smile on glider pilots in time to reward everyone with great soaring flights. Congratulations to Bob Watson and Andrew Menzies on their 1/2 hour flights for their B certificates. Andrew then followed through with his first 1 hour flight towards the C certificate. Well done! |
| 5 August 2004 | Contrary to a previous announcement here the original date for the compulsory lecture for all pilots wanting to fly at this year's Flinders Ranges camp has now been confirmed. |
| 31 July 2004 | The new 'Whisper' is available in the newsletter
archive. Grab your copy. Also, a reminder to all that the Minlaton 'barnstorming' club outing is coming up. Both twin-seaters will be going. Check the Events Calendar for details. A further reminder goes to all those who have put their names on the list for the Waikerie 'Basic Cross Country Course' and 'Performance week'. As this is not a club event, if you want an aircraft you will have to apply in writing to the committee to 'take an aircraft away'. Ask a committee member for the correponding form. BXC and GHT are already spoken for. There is also the opportunity to hire aircraft from Waikerie at their going commercial rate. But be quick with your bookings! Indications are that numbers will be up significantly. |
| 26 July 2004 | The committee meeting on Saturday
has resulted in another update of the Events
Calendar. Most events for
this year are now fully detailed. Please note that two aircraft have already been allocated to go to the Waikerie "Basic Cross Country Course" and "Performance Week". There are quite a few members who have registered their intention to attend but no further "Requests to take aircraft away" have been lodged with the committee. If you don't know how, please contact any committee member or instructor. It was also noted that with one exception the club has not had any new Official Observers since almost 10 years! With the list of Official Observers in the club shrinking due to age-related attrition it might become increasingly difficult to find an OO to witness and sign for your badge and other such flights. We are looking for volunteers. Please contact the club coach! With the AGM coming up soon it is also time to think about nominations (and volunteering) for club positions such as the president, treasurer, and serving on the committee. What can you do to help with running the club? |
| 24 July 2004 | This month started off with a
refresher course for our instructors. The weather during
the day threw in some extra challenges with over 25 knot
(cross)winds that gradually increased in strength.
Eventually ground handling was becoming more of a
wrestling match to keep the gliders on the ground,
relegating procedings into the clubhouse for the rest of
the day. Nonetheless, the theory workshop and discussions
were just as fruitful as the practical flying sessions.
Our sincere thanks go to Paul Mason, Level 3 instructor
and CFI at Gawler, who conducted the course. His efforts
are much appreciated and will no doubt be reflected in
the quality and consistency of the flight training at our
club from now on. For the first the two winter working bees earlier this month we had quite a good turnup and with so many eager hands to help all scheduled jobs were done in no time at all. Flying started around lunchtime. The weather played along and rewarded most of the attendants with extended soaring flights. |
| 27 June 2004 | The latest committee meeting has
added more "definition" to the Events
Calendar. Importantly,
there is compulsory seminar for all
pilots wanting to fly at the Flinders Ranges Camp this
year. We are also going to have a lecture for our early solo pilots covering the theory required towards the "Silver C". |
| 20 June 2004 | The Events Calendar is starting to fill up rapidly. We can look forward to an interesting time. There are club and external events listed until January next year already. |
| 4 June 2004 | The Events Calendar has been updated again. Congratulations to Andrew Menzies on his first solo on Saturday, 29/05/2004! |
| 27 May 2004 | The topics and dates for the SAGA
Winter Lecture series have been set and can now be found
in the Events Calendar.
There will be something for everyone, from total novice
to gliding champion. Come along for an educational
experience across the entire spectrum of soaring
presented in an informal manner by a panel of experienced
gliding instructors, coaches, and distinguished pilots
and mix socially with glider pilots from around the state.
One way or another you will be a better pilot after these
sessions! There will also be a lecture by Dr Jörg Hacker on the formation, composition and structure of thermals. Time and venue are yet to be determined. |
| 21 May 2004 | A new 'Whisper' is available to download and the Events Calendar has been updated again. |
| 2 May 2004 | The latest committe meeting has
resulted in a few more dates for the Events
Calendar again. This
includes two working bees, the AGM, Annual Dinner and
more. With some excellent soaring weather over the last few weekends we have been missing out on flying time due to the briefing at 11:00 whilst thermals were already going strong. It was therefore decided by the committee that the briefing for each flying day will be held at 10:00 from now on. Remember it is a MUST for all pilots who want to fly on that day. |
| 28 April 2004 | On Monday, 26 April 2004, Dirk
Seret from the Adelaide University Gliding Club flew across from Lochiel airfield to
Balaklava in the Club Libelle to claim the "Come and
Get It" Trophy, which we held since November last
year when Bernard Eckey claimed it back from Whyalla.
Congratulations Dirk! Well done! To all Balaklava members: Who is going to reciprocate and go to get it back?? |
| 25 April 2004 | This time of year it tends to get
a bit quiet around the airfield as the weather in
Adelaide deters people from the drive to the club.
However, the regulars know that even in the winter months
Balaklava has good soaring flights to offer. Winter
thermals may not be as strong (although this has been
proven wrong on a number of occasions) and go as high as
during a boomer day in summer, but they tend to be fairly
regular and not as far apart. This is the time to hone
your soaring skills for getting away in summer. On
occasions we also get wave during this time of year but
you have to be there when the opportunity presents itself. This is also the time where our aircraft are rotated one by one through the workshop for their annual "Form 2" inspections and much needed maintenance. Come along and lend our airworthiness team a hand! You might be surprised about how much fun it can be in the friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the sense of achievement and satisfaction derived from keeping our flying machines in good nick. Please do not forget that every hour someone spends in the workshop is keeping your club and flying fees down. And let's not forget the theoretical knowledge that makes you a better pilot. With Bernard Eckey, our club coach, the new South Australian RTO - Sports we can look forward to the continuation of the very interesting winter season lecture series instigated last year by the RTO Sports at the time, Catherine Conway. Check the Events Calendar and/or the club noticeboard regularly for dates and details. |
| 18 April 2004 | Our series of 50th Anniversary Celebration events is now club history. The first flight of the Clare Soaring Club was commemorated with a day's flying from the paddock next to the original site. The weather played along and almost every launch resulted in a soaring flight until the allocated time was up. It was great to have three of the founding members present, each of whom had a flight. After the trek back to the airfield the hungry mob was treated to a BBQ dinner followed by a video and slide show from Noel and Beverley Matthews, with footage and pictures from the beginnings right through the history of the club. This triggered the odd memories, reflections and stories from the older members, making for a very entertaining night. Tying past to present CFI John Wheatcroft presented the Level 2 Instructor certificate to Ulrich Stauss who recently earned his rating upgrade. |
| 22 March 2004 | The next instructors meeting had
to be postponed a week because of the final on that same
date. A map is now available that shows how to get to the original Clare Soaring Club site. |
| 18 March 2004 | Another Events
Calendar update was long
overdue. Please note that our 50th Anniversary Closing
Celebration has been postponed to 17 April 2004. Fire
precautions and other issues necessitated this change. The Celebration will start with a convoy from Whitwarta airfield to the site of the original launch. One winch and at least one ASK21 will be along. During the day there will be opportunity to fly from (near) the original paddock followed by a meal, film(s), photos, stories, and liquid refreshments. (Further details and a map to be announced closer to the event. Watch this space!) |
| 23 Febuary 2004 | The new 'Whisper' is out. It is packed with articles about
the recent highlights around the club; there are messages
from the President, the CFI, and Geoff Benny; John Hudson
discusses the ramifications of the airspace changes
effective since November. Download it from the
newsletter archive. Having just returned from the AUGC Regatta it is hard not to be exuberant about it! It was great fun and an extraordinary learning opportunity for participants. There were 11 gliders from 4 SA clubs competing and several more gliders soaring locally. Entries ranged from the Grunau Baby 2 to the Mini-Nimbus. Due to weather (what else?) an official task was only set on Sunday (AUGC-Redhill-Blyth-AUGC, 119 km for the higher performance gliders and AUGC-Snowtown-Bute-Nantawarra-AUGC for the Grunau and Arrow). All but two gliders outlanded, most finding the first turnpoint too hard to crack. Retrieve stories aplenty. Winners: Keith Willis - PW5, Derek Spencer/Alban O'Brian - the mighty Bergfalke!, Derek Eilers - Boomerang. Catering was superb with webbered roast lamb and beef on Saturday, and a BBQ on Sunday - David Hichens raised the bar to an unprecedented level! This event highlighted the need for more competitions at this level as an entry into the art of competition and cross country soaring for the "next generation". Club committees take note! |
| 8 Febuary 2004 | After the latest committee meeting
we have some new entries in the Events
Calendar including the next
Pylon Race and this year's Flinders Ranges camp. We have also received an invitation from the Adelaide Uni Gliding Club to their regatta 21-22/02/04 and decided to shift operations on both days to Lochiel. One winch and all club aircraft will be going there. |
| 1 Febuary 2004 | Our Dawn Patrol event Saturday 31
January 2004 was a phenomenal success! It started off
with a larger-than-usual crowd gradually filing in Friday
night. Wakeup call was 5:00 in the morning with air-horns, winch motors and clanging kitchen utensils getting everyone to their feet in a hurry. First light and first flight just after 6 o'clock. Have you ever seen the sparks fly off a winch wire? Truely an impressive sight! The glow lighting up the runway made every head turn. Everyone enjoyed the unusual experience of flying in the still morning air. After a superb cooked breakfast we were back for some serious fun in the skies, nearly breaking the all time record number of flights in one day. The weather had some interesting changes in store with thermal conditions changing several times during the day which made for some interesting flying. Two of our recent solo pilots were able to complete their half hour flights towards their B certificates, both with a significant margin. The club spirit and the atmosphere throughout the entire day were remarkable! A BIG "Thank You" goes to all involved in organising and running this memorable day! |
| 27 January 2004 | Congratulations to Matt Colwell who went for his first solo flight on 18 January, and also to Bob Watson who achieved this same milestone a week later on 24 January. A photographic account of these events is in our new photoalbum. |
| 9 January 2004 | A Happy New Year to all! The Christmas break was yet again an eventful time for our club. We had members participate in the Gawler week (congratulations to James Doman who flew the Mini Nimbus on winning one day) and the Waikerie Performance week is in full swing with several members involved. The mob that took the two ASK21 twin seaters to Port Vincent for the Gala Day festival had a good time flying well over 50 Air Experience Flights, enjoying the breath-taking view, admiring Bert's antics (in the air) and joining in the festivities (the band that had the entire town rocking, the fireworks, the dinner at the pub, ...). Last years' news are again archived as a chronicle of what's been going on at the club over the years. The links are at the bottom of this page. |
| 23 December 2003 | The final 'Whisper' for this year is available for download. |
| 14 December 2003 | Accomodation for the Pt. Vincent
Gala Day event 31 December to 3 January is available at
the Tuckerway Hostel. Members need to book individually.
See the Events Calendar
for details. Resulting from the recent committee meeting our prices will increase as from 1 January 2004 as follows:
Juniors pay 2/3 of these rates. Bulk flying scheme increases to $900 p.a. |
| 9 December 2003 | As outcome of the recent
instructors meeting we will start every flying
day with a pilots briefing at 10:00 from now on which all
pilots who want to fly that day must attend. The Christmas party was another well organised event and a very enjoyable night, especially for the retrieve crews of our two outlanders that day. The Events Calendar is now up to date again and our prices have been corrected. |
